Optimizing your Connection
Is my system configured for optimum performance?
Why does it take
so long to verify my usename and password whenever I logon to Romanweb?
The answer to these two questions is essentially the same. If your system is not
optimized for throughput, it could be causing the lag that occurs whenever you logon to
Abraxis.
If it seems to be taking an exceptionally long time to "Verify username and Password" whenever you logon, your computer may be performing unnecessary calculations.
TCP/IP
is the protocol that is needed to communicate over the Internet, but there
are lots of other protocols as well. Two of these are NetBEUI and IPX/SPX which by default
are installed on your Windows 95 machine. You don't need either one of these when you log
onto the Internet, in fact, they slow you down.
Everytime you connect, if you have NetBEUI and IPX/SPX enabled, your computer is making calculations for those two protocols which you aren't using, thus slowing down your overall speed. To eliminate this, we need to disable them in the Dialer. It's also a good idea to specify the Name Server addresses that your connection will use. If you do not specify the Domain Server addresses, it could be taking longer to resolve Domain Names, therefore taking you longer to access web sites.
Here's how to make sure your dialer is optimally configured:
1. Double-click the "My Computer" Icon
2. Double-click the "Dial-Up Networking" Icon.
3. Single-click the Romanweb icon with the RIGHT mouse button, and select Properties.
4. In the "Phone Number" section, make sure the "use Country Code and Area Code" option is NOT checked.
5 Click the "Server Type" settings, which should look like this:
6. The type of Dial-Up Server should be set to "PPP: Windows95, WindowsNT 3.5 Internet"
7. In the Advanced options section, make sure:"Log onto network" IS NOT checked
"Enable software compression" IS checked
"Require encrypted password" IS NOT checked8. In the Allowed Network Protocols Section, make sure:
"NetBUEI" IS NOT checked
"IPX/SPX" IS NOT checked
"TCP/IP" IS checked9. Click on "TCP/IP Settings", which should look like this:
10. Make Sure "Server Assigned IP Address" is selected.
11. Make sure "Specify Name Server Addresses" is selected, and enter in:Primary DNS: 207.48.231.34
Secondary DNS: 204.70.57.24212. Make sure Primary and Secondary WINS configuration are set to 0.0.0.0
13. "Use IP header compression" should be checked
14. "Use default gateway on remote network" should be checked
15. Click "OK" until you have returned to the "Dial-Up Networking" window. That's It!
